Web App vs Mobile App vs Desktop App: What to Build First
How to choose between a web app, a React Native mobile app and an Electron desktop app for a new product, based on where users are, offline needs, device access and budget.

Quick answer
Build a web app first unless you have a specific reason not to: it reaches every device, needs no app-store approval and is the cheapest to change. Build a mobile app when users are on their phones in the field, need push notifications, the camera or offline use. Build a desktop app when the software must run without internet, talk to local hardware or printers, or live on a shop or clinic PC all day. Many products start as a web app and add mobile later from the same backend.
Side by side
| Criterion | Web app | Mobile app (React Native) | Desktop app (Electron) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reach | Any device with a browser | Phones and tablets, via app stores | Windows, macOS, Linux PCs |
| Distribution | A link | Google Play and App Store review | Installer and auto-updates |
| Offline use | Limited | Good | Full |
| Device access | Limited (camera, location with permission) | Full: camera, push, contacts, GPS | Full: file system, printers, serial/USB hardware |
| Cost to build | Lowest | Higher; two stores to publish | Medium; one codebase, three installers |
| Cost to change | Lowest; deploy instantly | Store review on every release | Ship an update; users install |
| Typical examples | SaaS, portals, marketplaces, dashboards | Ordering, booking, field apps | POS, ledgers, clinic and pharmacy systems, hardware tools |

Questions about this choice
Can one backend serve a web app, a mobile app and a desktop app?
Yes. A Node.js or Supabase backend with a REST API can serve all three; that is how most of our multi-platform projects are built.
Is a progressive web app a substitute for a mobile app?
Often, yes, for ordering and booking flows. It falls short when you need reliable push notifications on iOS, deep device access or an app-store presence.
